Niedersächsisches Wirkstoffzentrum

The Centre of Drug Research (Niedersächsische Wirkstoffzentrum) is a collaboration of research centers throughout the region of Hannover-Braunschweig. These centers aim to develop active substances through chemical and biological research for the treatment of infectious- and tumor diseases and thereby fall back on the already existing expertise in the field of active- and natural substance research in the region. The participating research centers of the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), the Technische Universität Braunschweig (TUBs) and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, work on natural products as ideal starting point for drug research since these compounds have been pre-optimized by nature through evolutionary processes.
The Niedersächsische Wirkstoffzentrum is an essential part of the Translation Alliance for Pharmaceutical Development in Lower Saxony (TrAIN), whose mission is to develop innovative active substance research. Goal of this translation alliance is to find solutions for current problems in the fields of infection research and tumor therapy through a joint collaboration. This shall be achieved by the development of a value chain that ranges from the mathematical description of biological processes to active substance synthesis  to medical testing.
In the Niedersächsischen Wirkstoffzentrum biological as well as chemical competences are combined. With the connection of these partial aspects and the utilization of the particular resources at the locations, a concept of an interdisciplinary Wirkstoffzentrum was implemented on two locations (Braunschweig-Hannover).

Research Centres within the collaboration

Centre of Biomolecular Drug Research (BMWZ) which was established as an interdisciplinary research centre at the Leibniz Universität Hannover. It houses research
groups working in the fields of chemistry, biology and medicine.

The Centre of Pharmaverfahrenstechnik, which was established at the Technical University Braunschweig. It combines biological, pharmaceutical and technical
engineering expertise and aims at providing production facilities for drugs.

The Zentrum für Wirkstoffforschung und funktionelle Genomik, which will be established  on the campus of the HZI, hosting groups of chemical biology, medicinal chemistry and biotechnology.
