Research Center NIFE

NIFE (Niedersächsische Zentrum für Biomedizintechnik, Implantatforschung und Entwicklung) is a recently founded research center in Lower Saxony that focuses on translational research in the areas of biomedical technologies, medical implants and regenerative therapies. NIFE will house research groups in a center currently under construction that are recruited from Hannover Medical School (MHH), the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo), the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) and the Laser Center Hannover (LZH). Besides research and development, NIFE utilizes pre‐clinical and clinical expertise to guarantee rapid translation of research results.

REBIRTH & BIOFRABICATION

The Niedersächsische Wirkstoffzentrum is actively involved in the research networks REBIRTH and BIOFABRICATION.

REBIRTH is a Hannover‐based cluster of excellence in which about 70 research groups develop new therapies for regenerative medicine in a highly interdisciplinary fashion, covering expertise from medicine, biochemistry, biotechnology, physics, chemistry, engineering and material sciences. Synergies are created by translating biomedical science and biotechnology to clinical practice. The focus is on degenerative diseases of the heart, lung, liver and blood.

BIOFABRICATION for NIFE is a research consortium that was recently established by three institutions, namely the MHH, the LUH and the HMTMH (Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover) to develop personalized medical implants with the aim to reduce infections associated with implantations. It is the goal to improve safety standards for regenerative therapies and to provide a platform for rapid translation into the clinic. Anti‐infectives and the development of biomaterials
with antibacterial properties, both of which are developed at the Niedersächsische Wirkstoffzentrum, play a key role in BIOFABRICATION for NIFE.

HIPS

The Helmholtz‐Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) was founded in 2009 in Saarbrücken, as spin-off of HZI. HIPS is the first non‐university based research facility in Germany that is explicitly devoted to pharmaceutical research, and it is closely integrated into the University of the Saarland (UdS). As a branch of the HZI,  HIPS is involved in the activities of the “Health” research field of the Helmholtz Association and the “Infection and Immunity” research program. The range of scientific work at HIPS comprises genetic and genome‐based natural product research as well as methodologies to improve the transport of pharmaceutical agents to their target. The instrumentation at the HIPS involves modern parallel syntheses instruments, isothermal calorimetry, Surface Plasmon Resonance as well modeling facilities.
The HIPS and the drug research groups at HZI Braunschweig dispose of complementary know-how and are closely collaborating, hence the NWZ has full access to the substantuial know-how of HIPS.
